Maya Angelou

African American poet, actress, singer, dancer, and civil rights activist. In her groundbreaking autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou shared the deep personal trauma she experienced as a child, including a violent assault that left her mute for nearly five years. She later became involved in the civil rights movement, working alongside Malcolm X until his passing. Despite many challenges, Angelou achieved international acclaim for her artistry and activism.
